Of Knuckles and Giants

Well this isn’t about any Plants vs. Zombies gargantua or Harry Potter trolls. I’m writing about the day my two friends and I went to visit our ex-school. Let’s just say we went there because we wanted to see some teachers and students we know. We wanted to walk down memory lane, so to say. Haha.

One reason I’m writing this is because I’ve finally understood why the older generations used to say that the younger pupils are getting shorter and shorter. There could be two factors we think that way. It’s either because we are growing taller or the younger pupils are getting smaller and smaller. It could be both, too. In fact, I’m short for my age, so for me to think that way you can guess how genuine that is. But I’m mostly referring to the standard 2s and 3s, because many standard 6 fellows are taller than me.

Speaking of standard 6 fellows, one of my friend had a younger brother in that school so while three of us were at his class, I just got into a very weird conversation with a standard 6 pupil I don’t know at all. He asked me whether I knew how to crack my knuckles and I said yes. Then he cracked his knuckles and asked me if I could do that. I was speechless. I honestly didn’t know what to say, and that’s saying something about my social skills. In fact, I kind of ignored him, apologizing quietly. Anyway, I got to meet my friend’s brother. Maybe I’ll see him next year. My PMR year. Sigh.

Before that we were just walking around the school and then finally my friend stated the fact that we were like giants compared to all the standard ones. I was literally watching my step half the time because I didn’t want to knock any of them by accident. Well, when I was standard 1, I actually had fun just weaving around everyone, like a motorcycle weaving through traffic - everyone has to look out for you while you don’t have a care in the world. No wonder this school made a rule that no one was allowed to run in the school compound. But we little ones just found a loop hole- we skipped instead.

Anyway, we did meet some teachers, too; Like my former English teacher, Mdm. Mag and My standard one class teacher, Mrs. Chia. I’m actually a bit disappointed that my standard 6 class-teacher had moved to another school after becoming the headmistress there. One teacher told us that the pupils nowadays are exposed to many, many new kinds of technology from a very young age. iPhones, Plasma TVs… you name it. Yea, that’s quite true. I was exposed to TV from a young age, too.

So that’s about my trip with my friends to m ex-school. I realized from this outing that my fluency with the Chinese language has declined tremendously. *Sigh* I’m very sorry, mandarin teachers. But what can I do? I speak mandarin not so often now.
